OPEN ECO: Andre Lichtenberg, newforest 1, 2023

André Lichtenberg’s large-scale artworks address issues of process, technology, and remembrance. His practice is informed by a technical and yet experimental approach to image-making. He is interested in the creative process and the creation of memory. His projects

investigate the complex relationship between humans and the natural world.

André says ‘My large scale photographic studies of forests combine the use of selective multiple exposures of woodlands to create ambiguous and intriguing works that explore our relationship to the natural environment. Designed to evoke strong emotions through beauty and subjectivity, my images invite the viewer to locate themselves within a dramatic environment. My hope is that this deep and personal engagement provokes contemplation and as a consequence, raises awareness of the significance of forestry and green spaces in maintaining life on earth and our responsibility to honour this.’

André Lichtenberg has a Masters in Photographic Studies from The University of Westminster and works from a studio in Hove, UK. He has collaborated with publications such as the Sunday Times (London) and Le Monde (Paris). Lichtenberg has received several international prizes and awards, including the Aesthetica Art Prize, Renaissance Photography Prize, and AOP Awards. His work has been exhibited in prestigious spaces, including: Centro Cultural Sao Paulo (Brazil), The Photographers Gallery, and the Barbican Centre (London).

Photo Fringe invited artists to propose a single image to engage audiences and help us imagine a greener, fairer world. Artists were asked to respond to the question “How can photography make a difference to the climate crisis?"

The resulting outdoor exhibition of selected images by nineteen artists can be found on Brighton seafront next to the Upside Down House until 17 November 2024.
