Large Format Photography Workshop
The slow pace and deliberate process of large format photography offers a quality of image unlike any other.
This small group workshop has a maximum of only 3 students so we can really delve deep into understanding and using large format field cameras.
You will learn how to load sheet film and the process of setting up and working with a 5x4 Horseman field camera.
There will be the option of shooting both film and direct to positive paper which can be developed in the darkroom at the end of the day. After the workshop you will receive hi-res scans of any negatives.
This workshop is suitable for photographers with prior knowledge of working in film.

Analogue Photography Course
TUES 8th & 15th OCTOBER 9.30AM - 3.30PM
Join 71 Darkroom over two days to learn the fundamentals of working in black and white analogue photography.
Day One AM: Photography Walk. In our small group we will enjoy a photo walk around Lewes where you will shoot a roll of film whilst learning to feel confident using your camera. During this session you will gain an understanding of ISO’s, apertures, shutter speeds and metering. (Please note that for the evening classes this first session is run on the Saturday before the regular Wednesday classes)
Day One PM: Film Processing. Learn how to develop your film in the darkroom using photographic chemicals.
Day Two: Step into darkroom! In the final two weeks you will be working in the darkroom to make contact prints of your film and then final prints of your chosen negatives. You will learn how to use the De Vere enlargers and we will cover a range of printing techniques including test strips, dodging / burning, graded filters & paper types.
You are welcome to use your own film camera or borrow one, I have 35mm & medium format available, choice on a first come first served basis.

A conversation with Anthony Luvera about his project Families Living in Temporary Accommodation and socially engaged photography practice.
The event will take place on World Homeless Day, October 10th, from 17:30 to 18:30, at The Ledward Centre, 14a Jubilee St, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN1 1GE. Photobook Night
An evening for photobook and photography enthusiasts alike to enjoy 2 hours with a selection of photobooks on a variety of themes.
We encourage participants to bring their favourite book to share in the experience too. This is an informal social event, using photobooks as a tool to generate discussion around photography and to allow people to meet other photographers in the city.
The event will take place in Eldon foyer and visitors will also be able to see the Photography Showcase on display.

Root Down Preview
Root Down is a group exhibition by photographers Frankie Adams, Thaïs Verhasselt and Victor Anton, presented as part of the Photo Fringe Festival 2024 at LANO Yoga. This collaboration investigates the theme of grounding, using photography to delve into concepts of identity, connection and growth.
Root Down invites the viewers to embark on a grounding journey, much like the ones experienced on a yoga mat. To take their shoes off, feel the ground and connect with the space.

Workshop - Archive of Family Recipes
Participants can join the photographers Gurnoor Singh and Kamal Badhey and engage in a conversation and workshop around family recipes, ingredients, and memories connected to their personal histories.
Each participant should bring a photograph, plus a family recipe or food memory. Join us in the morning at CasaAzul in the market for the workshop on Saturday 12th October from 9:30-10:30am, followed by a short walk to Guru World Foods and Spices to see the exhibit.

Fergus Heron will discuss how the current exhibition Phoenix Place developed.

About the speakers
Kirsty Mackay was born Glasgow and grew up in a working-class tenement block in the city. Her experience underpins her approach to photography, both in terms of the topics she chooses and her approaches to them. Shooting portraits and documentary images, Mackay tackles poverty without demonising or patronising the people who face it.

Kelly O’Brien is an artist, researcher, and educator, originally from Derby. She was raised on state benefits in a council house by her single mother and collaborator, within a vibrant Irish immigrant and poor working-class community. These formative experiences deeply underpin her work.

Meet the Artist: Antonina Mamzenko
Come meet award-winning British photographer and multidisciplinary artist Antonina Mamzenko whose exhibition Bodies of Water, is on display for Photo Fringe at Sea Lanes, (inside Fika and Bison Beach Bar) throughout October.
Bodies of Water was born out of the frustration with the lack of visual representation and the perpetuation of societal stigmas surrounding people living in larger bodies, resulting in insidious messaging that those people are unhealthy, don't like to keep active, that their bodies are somehow wrong, and that they shouldn't be seen on a beach or at a pool.
Desert Island Pics - Presented by Stephen Bull
If you are cast away on a desert island and could take eight photographs, what would they be?
An invited guest is asked to imagine themselves castaway on a Desert Island. The castaway can choose eight significant photographs they would take with them. Stephen Bull and the castaway discuss the thoughts behind their choices.
Our cast away will be Fergus Heron.
Fergus Heron was born in London and currently lives and works in Brighton, England and Nairn, Scotland, United Kingdom. He studied at the Royal College of Art and the University for the Creative Arts.
Exhibitions featuring his work have taken place internationally at venues including Tate Britain, Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World, Royal West of England Academy, Museum for Contemporary Art, Roskilde, Denmark; K3 Project Space, Zurich, Switzerland.
His work is included in the anthology Emerging Landscapes (Abingdon: Routledge, 2014). He selected The Photographers’ Gallery Photography Culture: Photography and Landscape, edited Visible Economies (Brighton: Photoworks, 2012) and is a contributor to A Companion to Photography (Oxford: Blackwell, 2020). Heron is interviewed in Photoworks Ideas Series.
He is Course Leader for MA Photography and a research supervisor in the School of Art and Media at the University of Brighton, England.

This workshop covers the fundamentals of the darkroom and teaches you the skills to produce beautiful, exhibition quality black and white prints.
Tailored around your previous experience, we will cover topics including resin coated and fibre based papers, dodging and burning, and split grade printing.
All paper and chemistry are supplied. This workshop does not cover film processing and students are expected to arrive with black and white negatives ready to print. However, for an additional charge, film can be supplied / processed prior to the workshop.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners and those with experience.

Family Workshop with Lynn Weddle
Epic Everyday Worlds.
Make your own photographs inspired by Common Ground, the theme of this year’s Photo Fringe festival. Photographer Lynn Weddle will help you to create your own imagined mini scenes, turn your ideas into playful and fantastical worlds and give new meaning to everyday objects. Using mini photo studios, coloured lights and photographic techniques you will capture the scenes you have created. A small number of cameras will be available but please bring along your smart phone.
Phoenix Art Space family workshops are for children aged 5yrs+ to enjoy being creative together with their parents / carers. Artist-led and inspired by the themes of the Photo Fringe exhibition programme they are a great opportunity to have fun and explore different materials. All workshops are free and drop-in so there’s no need to book.
A conversation with the artist and curator Dr Gil Mualem-Doron
To accompany the exhibition The Heart of Darkness—Landscape Photography and Decolonial Photographic Practices at Colonnade House, Worthing, a conversation with the artist and curator Dr Gil Mualem-Doron. The conversation will also include a discussion about the connection between Gil's practice and the exhibition he curated with the BPOC Photographers Collective, Outlooks on the English Countryside, which will also be exhibited at Colonnade House Gallery.

Artist Talk with Phoebe Wingrove - In the Dark: Birth
Artist Phoebe Wingrove invites you to hear about her creative process, the curation of 'In the Dark: Birth' and how she's using her work to tackle women's health issues by creating abstract photography to ethically visualise women and AFAB (assigned female at birth) peoples' health experiences in an aim to raise awareness and create safe spaces for reflective conversations to happen.

How not to be In the Dark: Birth Workshop
Join Artist Phoebe Wingrove for a workshop to discuss all experiences of birth and explore how transparent we should be when it comes to preparing parents for birth. Manifestos are a way for people to share and promote their shared values and beliefs, addressing issues, and outlining their visions for the future. We'll work together to collaborate and co-curate a manifesto to inspire birthing parents-to-be, to follow in their navigation of pregnancy and preparation for birth.

How Not to be in the Dark: Abortion
Join photographers Phoebe Wingrove and Emily Damyan for an artist presentation and panel discussion that openly explores the topic of abortion. The talk will touch on current attitudes, knowledge about and access to abortion services and using art as a recovery process.
Emily Damyan’s exhibition for Photo Fringe, The Weight of Silence, explores the stigmatisation of abortion and the emotional difficulties arising from her own abortion. She describes the project as “having been cathartic in processing trauma”—helping her to reclaim her narrative, space, and autonomy. Drawing on this body of work, Emily will outline her approach to this project, and its personal and wider impact.
Following on from this, Phoebe Wingrove will lead a panel discussion that explores current attitudes to abortion, how these affect our access to information and services, and our reproductive choices.
The panellists include:
Emily Damyan, From Nottingham, Emily works with photography, sculpture and installation. The Weight of Silence is her most recent project.
Sandy Comber, PhD researcher and lecturer at the University of Chichester. Her current research focuses on the biopolitics of motherhood.
Ash Lipasek, has a background in healthcare. They currently work in Brighton, where they support local women's groups and charities through a trauma-informed approach to recovery.
Content warning: This event includes intimate and medical wording with imagery about abortion, which some may find triggering. There will be a quiet space available if audience members need to take a break.

Film Processing Class
In this short class you will learn how to process a black and white film that you have already shot. We will be using Paterson tanks which are suitable for 35mm, 120 & 5x4 sheet film.
You may process up to 2 of the same types of roll film or up to 6 sheets of 5x4. Approx 2 hours. Max class size of 2.

Join us for the launch of Alejandra Carles-Tolrá's photobook, The Bears. Created in direct response to the exhibition presented at the Phoenix Art Space, Carles-Tolra's latest publication invite us to question stereotypes associated to womxn who play rugby. Presented as a series of unbound diptychs within a folder, the book mirrors the dynamic and collaborative nature of the sport and the group. In this event, the author will talk about how she chose the design of the book to encourage readers to engage with the photographs in a playful and interactive manner, and to blur the lines between the individual and the collective.
Opening Reception – The Bears
Join us for the launch of Alejandra Carles-Tolrá's exhibition, The Bears.
‘The Bears' is a series of photographs portraying womxn who were part of Brown University’s rugby team between 2013-2015. Carles-Tolra's exhibition invites us to question stereotypes associated to womxn who play rugby.
Alejandra Carles-Tolra is a photographer, facilitator and educator from Barcelona based in London. Questions regarding what defines our identities and the role the group plays in our search for belonging drives her work.
Her work is part of the Arts Council Collection of England and the Col·lecció Nacional de Fotografía of Catalunya. It has been published/ exhibited internationally, including The Guardian, El Pais, National Portrait Gallery, Jerwood Space, Finnish Museum of Photography, Photo Miyota Japan, PHotoEspaña, and Wuhan Art Museum.
Please Note: There will be a Book Presentation of The Bears at 3-4pm.
UoB Photography Research Group | exhibition preview & panel talk
The Dorset Place Gallery will host a preview of work by members of the UoB Photography Research Excellence Group (REG) including by Holly Birtles, Zoe Childerley, Fergus Heron, Åsa Johannesson and Martin Seeds.

Peckham 24 X Photoworks Weekender
Please join us for an artists in conversation event hosted by Peckham 24 which brings together Africa Barrero-Alexander and Åsa Johannesson to discuss the themes of their artistic practices within the framework of Johannesson’s recent publication, Queer Methodology for Photography.
Africa Barrero-Alexander is the winner of the Peckham 24 x Photo Fringe Open Call, and his image Seventh Day from the ongoing series This Body Was Carved from Stone, is on display in Fabrica’s In Between Gallery from 14 - 27th October. Åsa Johannesson is an artist working across photography, installation and writing. Her practice concerns the relationship between queerness, representation and material knowledge production.

Performative Lecture: Almost Nothing But Blue Ground
Almost Nothing But Blue Ground is a research project by artists Matthew Benington and Tom Pope. The performative lecture brings to life an archive of research on Anna Atkins, along with other artefacts in the form of storytelling, archival material, research and cyanotype prints. The archive was the result of a performative weeklong walk in 2021, from Ferox House where Atkins lived in Tonbridge to Ferring where her collaborator Anne Dixon lived.

The walk will lead participants to the site of the Itford Hill Bronze Age Settlement, a central theme in Martin’s work. Along the way, we will observe the flora, fauna and wildlife, and on arrival, we will connect with the space in front of a fire with warm drinks and folk songs sung by Isa Howie. We will be accompanied by archaeologist Lisa Fisher and local nature lover and birder Ali Walters.
False Flags and Other Mistakes – A talk by MacDonaldStrand
MacDonaldStrand will talk about their ongoing practice and their latest project, False Flags, 2024, which is on show at Gallery DODO in the Phoenix Art Space. The Gallery will be open from 10.30 for viewing before the talk. Free coffee and apple cake will be available in the White Room. This will be a hangover-friendly event.
