OPEN ECO: Nadia Nervo, as if I had always danced with the trees, from the series Dancing with Trees, 2022

The photographic series Dancing with Trees showcases responses to trees through 120mm film photography. Through Nadia’s intimate lens, the artist provides a window to an ethereal connection with nature. Dancing with Trees connects the soul via energy of the forest, nature and trees. In wake of the global climate crisis, a necessity for a rediscovery of nature is essential - extending love for the natural world, especially for those in metropolitan cities, is vital for our planet’s sustenance. Numerous studies show that both being in forests and simply sitting and looking at trees reduces both blood pressure and stress. Long before the advent of modern science, shamans sought spiritual awakenings and used trees for holistic purposes. Dances with trees were believed to increase vitality and spiritual awareness.

In her work, Nadia investigates the relationship between the photographer and subject, often working with strangers and exploring the nature of connections being made. Intimacy and trust between artist and sitter are key elements in her practice and fundamental to the viewer’s relationship to her portraits.
Reoccurring themes in her work are gender identity, the female body and movement.

In her practice Nadia incorporates photography, video, and performance. She
received a master’s degree in Art Communication & Design from the Royal College of Art, London in 2003. She works as Freelance Curator and Artists Coach.

Photo Fringe invited artists to propose a single image to engage audiences and help us imagine a greener, fairer world. Artists were asked to respond to the question “How can photography make a difference to the climate crisis?"

The resulting outdoor exhibition of selected images by nineteen artists can be found on Brighton seafront next to the Upside Down House until 17 November 2024.
