Common Ground

The Wellbeing Hub

For our 30 artists, Common Ground represents shared experiences and connections. The Wellbeing Hub proudly presents this exhibition, showcasing the creativity of our clients as they capture the spaces where we find unity. Their unique interpretations contribute to a broader conversation about community, solidarity, and the impact of these shared spaces on our sense of well-being.

Common Ground
The Wellbeing Hub

E.G. Kore - Common Ground on the south downs This photo, I took of ' Common Ground'   On the South Downs , during one of the lockdowns in the Global Pandemic of 2020 to 2022

A really good friend of mine ( who  I meet on one of the nature walks organized by the hub) and I went out in the freezing cold to connect with nature. We had both been recently bereaved of our Mothers,  and we both in alot of emotional pain.

We stood on the hill and literally howled like wolves , hoping to realise some of the pain of grief.

Benna McCartney - Crosses at Beachy Head My Mum and first love took their own lives and even though their stories of passing were different, I took this photo to remind me of them and so many others who have passed in this way. Grief is deeply common ground that most people have experienced and/or will experience in their lifetime. Death is the only thing we know is going to happen, yet so many don’t even think about it, let alone talk about it, so this photo is to invite conversation on this subject matter

Magpie Sue - Peacock Butterfly on bench

Mandy - The Problem Some of my neighbours throw litter on the path outside where we live, even though we are surrounded by bins. I always like to find something positive or amusing about anything that annoys me, if I can. So when I saw the wind had blown bits of rubbish together, and created this ‘work of art’, I captured it in a photo.

Mary Jane Bell - Where the sea meets the shore I was visiting my sister who lives on the little island of Ios in Greece. Whilst taking a long trek to a deserted beach called Diamoudia, a local hunting dog started accompanying us of his own accord. You can just see him down on the beach way ahead of us. He even came swimming with us. I think it must have been his first time by all the thrashing about in the water. The point I wanted to make is that us humans and domesticated animals alike, can let our hair down and benefit from spending time in nature.

Shay - The Snowdrop Connection Snowdrops spotting during a walk and talk group

Keith - The Happy Spoon Everyone likes a drink of tea or coffee. It  starts or breaks the day, whether alone or with friends.

Magpie - The Angry Cross Influenced by the current government. This is from a series of photos with my mobile in the beautiful local graveyard. I dipped them with bleach and the odd scratch for effect

Lee - The Robin When robins appear then a loved one is near

Suzy Francis - The Golden Shower A place to walk where all can feel at peace with nature and themselves

Tina - Farming friends like me

Rose - Snail on a hay bale. Here is a picture I took of a snail on a hay bale on the downs. It's taken on film.

Simon Myers - Stardust. I chose this photo I took of David Bowie painted on the front of a building because although a very personal thing, I think a love of music is something we often have in common.  The graffiti art is by Jef Aerosol.

Danika McElroy - A totem of unity. The merging of souls from around the globe. A coming together to honour the land beneath our feet; our shared earthly home. Singing around campfires and forest bathing, muddy feet and warm hearts, wild art and drum chants. Into the wild we go. A beautiful festival, a celebration of our common humanity, a remembering of our interconnectedness. A totem of unity.

Nadine Plentie - Rufus. This is my little fox friend I call Rufus, he sits on the wall near my window most days, we look at each other both intrigued and he gives me a little fox smile.

Leila Randall - Reflections. Sheffield Park in Autumn. A place to meet, reflect and be at one with nature

Amina Osman - Reflect. This picture is where I feel the elements of earth and water meet and are reflected in each other. At first I thought I was just capturing a scenic lake, but for me it came to depict these two elements admiring each other! I feel it also reflects on what they have in common and how they contrast.  I took the picture in July 2024 during a visit to Charleston, nr Firle, East Sussex.

Just Justine - Curiosity. Spending time with Martin, Mia, Morag, Murray and Matilda the sheep, I got to see how different their personalities were. As humans we often think we're so different and better than other animals but it seems to me that we have more in common than we often acknowledge. Humans and sheep feel companionship, pain, joy, fear, hunger etc and we all just want to live.

Zorenah Chapman - Mount Fuji in Japan. I think we can all agree that nature’s beauty is everywhere

Sean Duffield - Curious Squirrel on common ground. In the 'common ground' of the Southover Grange Gardens at Lewes, I came across this inquisitive little fellow. These interactions with nature really help me feel more connected and really brighten up my day

Lyndsay Cedarwood - The Night Joggers. The theme Common Ground made me think of Common Land. Parks are a modern, urban kind of Common Land, free for all people to use and enjoy. These days we use these spaces to get ourselves out for exercise and play rather than grazing our livestock or gathering firewood.  My photo captures the head torch trails of a group of joggers (is there a collective noun for a group of joggers?) running through our local park on a dark winter's evening. I am not built for running, however I do find the sight of groups of people running together moving, in an emotional way. A hopeful way. They are side by side, offering motivation and momentum and also, though they are individuals, for as long as they are running together, you could say they are on common ground.

Elai Inti - Leaf and Hand

Lauraine Tomlinson - My mother gardening. This is my 89 year old mother still nurturing mother nature after all these years.

Cheryl Collins - Grounded I saw a leaf on my way back into my flat and it had a background of a "halo" of rainwater around it, which caught my attention. So "grounded" in this respect just means a leaf has fallen to the floor (ground)
Although the ground that I stepped over houses many people in the flats (some of whom I have experienced homophobia from) so in that respect that "common" ground where that leaf was situated, there have been different people of various opinions having a common ground of stepping into the same block of flats.

Julian Stevens - Counter Protest. I took this photo at the protest on the 7th August! Thought it had a strong message about uniting people together ❤️

Sea Shucksmith - Colour Match. I enjoy reading the strange names of the colours on the paint sample cards in B&Q. I take the silliest and find things in the world which match them. Sea Shucksmith (2headedpigeon) | Instagram, Facebook | Linktree

Kaye Tilbury - Fungi friends. We have shared DNA with fungi and fungi are connected to everything

Darius - Sharing the nectar A buff-tailed bumblebee and a western honey bee share nectar

Caroline Carter - Seagulls on Parade. I took this photo on the Palace Pier. I love watching seagulls behaviour and the way they swoop for food. I like the fact that gulls are such a prominent part of Brighton life and I feel we stand on common ground with them. Part of our community.

Mark Kelsall - On The Same Page. Me and my late wife Siobhan, we’re on the seafront near to the Peace statue. You can see me reflected in her glasses. We were always on the same page.
