Seventh Day
Africa Barrero-Alexander
The Peckham 24 team are delighted to announce that Africa Barrero-Alexander is the winner of the Peckham 24 x Photo Fringe Open Call. Seventh Day by Africa Barrero-Alexander is on view at Fabrica’s In Between Gallery as part of Photo Fringe, 24 hours a day from 14th to 27th October 2024.
In Seventh Day (2024) Barrero-Alexander turns the camera on himself to claim authorship of his trans body. The image on display is taken from the ongoing series, This Body Was Carved from Stone - a project initially started in private to create a visual record of the artist’s own medical transition. Through deeply personal photographic self-portraiture he creates space for himself within a social landscape that has become a highly politicised battleground.
“I aim to use my photography to instigate positive change in the public’s perspective of trans people: to show that behind the statistics and inflammatory headlines there are real human beings with stories to tell” Africa Barrero-Alexander
Artist biography
Africa Barrero-Alexander is a photographer based in Bristol, and recently graduated from The University of the West of England with a BA in Photography. His personal work is centred around the relationship between humanity and the land, the nature of the human condition, and the beauty of the mundane. He is currently interested in using photography as a therapeutic tool, and exploring its ability to reshape narratives and recontextualise past events and traumas. His photographic practice is a self-reflective act of healing: a non-verbal dialogue between the holder of the camera and the beholder of the photograph.
