The Way We View Ourselves
Donna Lawson
Body image issues
I wanted to explore why people feel the need to tear themselves down and highlight areas of their body and face they hate about themselves instead of looking at themselves as a whole picture.
There always seems to be a constant drive to look younger, slimmer, beautiful, never aging, will we ever be content, is acceptance of who we are and what we look like a reality? or dream that will never be fulfilled?
The project aim was to explore through photography different areas of what I feel is commonplace feelings amongst women of all ages and sizes:
Broken view – when you see anyone who looks amazing, but their view is distorted and broken in sense as they pick faults with each area of their face and body.
Unhappy/mental health issues with the way the look: they are bound/restricted by their view of how they see themselves.
Words will never hurt me – but they do! which words do they and other people use against them.
Acceptance – will they ever truly be happy.
Artist biography
As often as possible, my family and I pack up the camper and head off somewhere new. Photography becomes a way for me to visually document experiences, senses, and sights, preserving a story or moment in time.
My love for discovering new places and people has influenced my photography, developing my passion to capture the emotion and atmosphere in any given moment.
