The Way We View Ourselves

Donna Lawson

In this photographic exploration, I delve into the pervasive tendency people have to focus on their perceived flaws rather than appreciating their entirety.

Our culture relentlessly pushes ideals of youth, slimness, and beauty, creating a constant pressure to conform.

We often find ourselves asking: will we ever feel satisfied in our own skins, or is self-acceptance a distant dream?

Through my lens, I aim to capture the complex emotions surrounding self-image that resonate with individuals of all ages and sizes.

I highlight the "broken view" many possess—those who, despite appearing stunning to the outside world, fixate on tiny imperfections, distorting their self-perception.

This project will also shed light on the deeper struggles tied to mental health, illustrating how the way we perceive ourselves can confine us.

Words carry weight; they can uplift or wound, and I will explore the phrases that haunt us and shape our self-image.

Ultimately, this exhibition seeks to challenge the notion of acceptance—inviting viewers to embrace their unique selves. Through these images, I hope we can find a collective path toward recognising our beauty in wholeness, fostering a deeper sense of contentment and belonging.

Artist biography

As often as possible, my family and I pack up the camper van and head off somewhere new. Taking up photography became a way for me to visually document experiences, senses, and sights, preserving a story or moment in time.

Since buying my first DSLR in 2020 I have found that I’m most passionate about portraits and connecting with people, the thing I love the most is listening to stories about their lives, finding out about who they are is truly fascinating.

I hope to continue with the project into next year, having photographed 20 individuals over the past 15 months, I would like to exhibit everyone else’s story…..so watch this space and follow Donna Lawson Photography on all social media for further updates.
