If you are cast away on a desert island and could take eight photographs, what would they be?

An invited guest is asked to imagine themselves castaway on a Desert Island. The castaway can choose eight significant photographs they would take with them. Stephen Bull and the castaway discuss the thoughts behind their choices.

Our cast away will be Fergus Heron.

Fergus Heron was born in London and currently lives and works in Brighton, England and Nairn, Scotland, United Kingdom. He studied at the Royal College of Art and the University for the Creative Arts.

Exhibitions featuring his work have taken place internationally at venues including Tate Britain, Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World, Royal West of England Academy, Museum for Contemporary Art, Roskilde, Denmark; K3 Project Space, Zurich, Switzerland.

His work is included in the anthology Emerging Landscapes (Abingdon: Routledge, 2014). He selected The Photographers’ Gallery Photography Culture: Photography and Landscape, edited Visible Economies (Brighton: Photoworks, 2012) and is a contributor to A Companion to Photography (Oxford: Blackwell, 2020). Heron is interviewed in Photoworks Ideas Series.

He is Course Leader for MA Photography and a research supervisor in the School of Art and Media at the University of Brighton, England.

An insightful and energetic panel talk that accompanies the exhibition, The River Cries With Its Mouth Full Of Mud.
Visitors are invited to preview the exhibition and attend the panel discussion. The theme of this exhibition deals with space and trauma, prompting all artists to tackle the concept in broadly different ways.

The Dorset Place Gallery will host a preview of work by members of the UoB Photography Research Excellence Group (REG) including by Holly Birtles, Zoe Childerley, Fergus Heron, Åsa Johannesson and Martin Seeds.

6:30pm : panel discussion, hosted by Senior Lecturer Rachel Gillies with a selection of REG members.

The panel will give a brief overview of their practice followed by a conversation to reveal deeper insights into their work.

Peckham 24 X Photoworks Weekender

Please join us for an artists in conversation event hosted by Peckham 24 which brings together Africa Barrero-Alexander and Åsa Johannesson to discuss the themes of their artistic practices within the framework of Johannesson’s recent publication, Queer Methodology for Photography.

Africa Barrero-Alexander is the winner of the Peckham 24 x Photo Fringe Open Call, and his image Seventh Day from the ongoing series This Body Was Carved from Stone, is on display in Fabrica’s In Between Gallery from 14 - 27th October. Åsa Johannesson is an artist working across photography, installation and writing. Her practice concerns the relationship between queerness, representation and material knowledge production.
