Tracing Safe/r Spaces

Eddie Stenstrom

This photographic project delves into the multifaceted nature of safety for queer individuals. The concept of safety extends much deeper. It resides in fleeting moments of authenticity, experiences of acceptance, and the quiet comfort found in simply being oneself. The project invites viewers to reconsider the very idea of "space"—not as a fixed material entity, but as a dynamic and personal experience. Emphasising that safe spaces are not limited to physical locations; they can also be moments, feelings or experiences that evoke a sense of security. Therefore what feels secure and affirming for one might feel alienating or threatening for another.

This project does not seek to provide definitive answers to what a ‘safe space’ might be. It is through interviews and experimental portraiture in a collaborative approach between Eddie and Queer individuals to share what safe means to them individually.
